Founded in 1881 and with one of the highest application rates in Britain, the University of Nottingham is regarded as one of the top Universities in the country.
The University has campuses in China and Malaysia, but (as you can probably tell from the name) the main campus, The University Park Campus, is situated in Nottingham, towards Beeston and close to town. The Campus is a massive 330 acres of traditional antique buildings, and has won various different awards for its landscaping and architecture, as well as numerous Green Flag awards for its environmentally friendly residence. Other Campuses include The Jubilee Campus, which was only open in 1999, yet still follows the Park campus in being a very traditional and environmentally friendly campus, yet also has some contemporary features, such as the library, the Sir Harry and Lady Djanogly Learning Resource Centre, which is situated in the middle of the lake on campus, with one spiraling floor.
The Academic side of the University of Nottingham is extremely impressive. Having been awarded two Nobel prizes between 2000 and 2010 and named “University of the Year” in 2006 by The Times newspaper, the University has gained international recognition as a research institution and was awarded £140 million in the 2008-2009 academic year. Because of this, students at the University of Nottingham are usually expected to get ABB or AAB in their A-levels to be considered for entry, whilst also being able to maintain a respectable grade throughout their time at the University.
However, it’s not all work and toil at the University of Nottingham. Like most Universities, the University holds its own exclusive Student nights over at clubs such as Ocean, Oceana and Gatecrasher. Nottingham also offers Students the chance to join Societies from the Pole-dancing Society to the Computer society, whilst the sporting clubs get the chance to train in some of the best facilities in the country, whilst taking on rival University Nottingham Trent, each year in the sports Varsity matches, but be warned; although the University of Nottingham is almost unrivalled for academic success, they have been losing Varsity sports matches to Trent rather heavily, ever since the rivalry occurred!
