The Palace Theatre, located in Newark, is a theatre which showcases the best in live theatre, local live music and classic cinematic favourites.

The Palace plans every move it makes throughout the year, releasing two listings each year, the first from January until April the second from June to December. The listings include theatre classics such as Romeo and Juliet and The Picture of Dorian Gray, with also modern favourites such as the Full Monty and Boycie and Marleen. Shows are sometimes spread out apart from each other, and sometimes bunched closely together, it merely depends on who the palace can book and when.

Unlike most cinemas, The Palace does not showcase the latest Hollywood blockbusters, in fact they don’t show too many films at all. What they do, is show classic films that they believe will appeal to visitors. During each month they show certain films of a criteria, such as in January 2010, the whole month was dedicated to the best films of 2009, and February was dedicated to stage adaptations. Although they do not show the latest films, The Palace is special because it gives you the chance to view all your favourite films on the big screen, even though they aren’t actually on at the cinema, how often do you get that kind of deal? And with tickets costing a mere £4 for Adults and £3 concessions, you can’t really argue!

On most Sunday lunchtimes the Palace put on live music, usually a jazz band or jazz orchestra, nothing too heavy as it would not fit in with the Palace’s relaxed feeling.

However, because of the Palace’s small prices and independent spirit, they do rely on community help to see them through. If you become ‘a friend of the palace’ you pay for a membership (£7 for an individual, £11 for a couple, and £17 for a family) and you’ll reap numerous benefits such as half price tickets and back stage tours, whilst supporting your local theatre and keeping the performing arts alive!
